Kernavė archaeological site 20 years on the UNESCO World Heritage List

Lithuania's Troja, the Mecca of archaeology - the archaeological site of Kernavė is often described as such - is celebrating the 20th anniversary of Kernavė's UNESCO World Heritage status in 2024, and invites you to celebrate it together with the entire Lithuania. This anniversary is a celebration of the consistent and responsible work of the Administration of the State Cultural Reserve of Kernavė to preserve the cultural landscape of Kernavė of exceptional value, the quality of its heritage assets and the importance of Kernavė for the knowledge of the history of the Baltic region.

The Kernavė Archaeological Site ("State Cultural Reserve of Kernavė") is a unique territorial complex of archaeological and historical values, inscribed on 7 July 2004 as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, thus recognising the importance of the site according to two criteria of outstanding universal value established by the World Heritage Committee. The site contains exceptional evidence of pantheistic and Christian burial traditions. The layout of the settlements and the impressive mounds are exceptional examples of the development and use of this structural type of site in the pre-Christian period.
